Corporate Overview Calgary

City Council approved 2006 - 2008 business plans and budgets on November 23, 2005. Highlights include:

- three-year operating budgets totaling $6 billion
- a capital budget of $1 billion in 2006 as part of a five-year capital budget plan of $3.7 billion
- property tax rate increases of 4.4% in 2006, 4.9% in 2007, and 4.5% in 2008, and
- no change in the business tax rates in any of the three years.

For citizens, this means:

- 128 additional police officers and support personnel to help keep pace with the growing population
- 360,000 additional hours of transit service and 84,100 additional Access Calgary trips by 2008
- more staff and equipment for residential garbage collection 79 additional positions and new fire stations to open in Lower Springbank / Signal Hill, Royal Oak and Valley Ridge by 2008.

This is the largest capital budget ever approved for infrastructure, including projects such as:

- a new District 1 police office in the downtown and a District 5 office in Saddleridge
- a new emergency operations centre
- continuing work on the Glenmore / Elbow / 5th Street interchange
- road widening on 16 Ave. north
- extention of the reginal pathway system
- new light rail vehicles and buses; refurbishment of three downtown LRT platforms and extension of the LRT line northwest to Crowfoot and northeast to Westwinds.
